Call for expression of interest for country researchers on creating a portrait of journalists in East Africa

African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) invites expressions of interest from qualified candidates from Kenya and Tanzania to serve as consultants/lead researchers on a study to profile the journalists, and explore their demographics, role perceptions, professional attitudes and beliefs, and major threats to their freedom to do their work.

ACME received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to implement a project titled Enhancing Media Capacity for Inclusive Development, which, among others, focuses on expanding the knowledge base on journalism and media in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. One of the activities under this project is research that profiles journalists in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. ACME finalised the research in Uganda in 2021 and is now rolling out the same in Kenya and Tanzania.

Interested candidates must:

  • have an advanced degree in journalism and/or mass communication;
  • be familiar with the media landscape in the country, and eastern Africa in general;
  • be conversant with social science research methods, and must have conducted research on the media before; and
  • be ready to work with minimum supervision.

Interested national researchers should submit a short expression of interest and a proposed work plan for the research to mwesige[at]acme-ug.org not later than Monday 13 June. They should also indicate their daily rate and expected person days to be spent on the project.

More information about the research project, the scope of the assignment and compensation are available in the Terms of reference for country consultants for research project on a national portrait of journalists.
