The current presidential election campaigns have been marked by a media blitz never before witnessed in Ugandan politics. As the race nears the finishing line, presidential candidates, particularly the two leading ones – President Museveni and Dr Kizza Besigye – have unleashed an aggressive media campaign, especially on radio and television.
However, it is the Democratic Party candidate, Norbert Mao, who appears to be heads and shoulders above them all in the cyber space medium. Mao, who likens himself to US President Barack Obama, has an active presence on twitter, facebook and myspace, among others. His campaign website www.norbertmao.org is the gateway to captivating debates.
Radio advertising for presidential candidates is not something new, but the volume of adverts is. Besides, it was previously almost a preserve of the incumbent.
