Ugandan tabloid to pay Shs4.5m over gays story

Court has ordered a local tabloid to compensate three people over publishing their photographs and identities in violation of their privacy and human rights.

High Court Judge Kibuuka Musoke ordered the proprietors of the Rolling Stone Newspaper, a weekly publication, to pay each Shs1.5 million to Ms Jacqueline Kasha, David Kato and Patience Onziema as damages as a result of an October 2, 2010 story.

“Court would therefore find that the impugned publication threatened the rights of the applicants to respect for human dignity and protection from inhuman treatment and right to privacy of the person and home,” held Justice Musoke.

“Court would upon that account issue the injunction sought by the applicants, the motion restraining the respondents from further publications of the identities of the persons and homes.”
