The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) invites applications from Ugandan journalists for a series of intensive short courses on Covering Elections.

About the course
As Uganda approaches another general election, the role of the media in ensuring informed, inclusive and responsible public debate remains critical. Journalists are central to helping citizens understand the issues at stake, scrutinise those seeking office, and hold institutions accountable for conducting credible elections.

With support from The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), ACME has designed this course to build the skills and confidence of journalists with no or limited experience on election reporting. The training responds to the evolving realities of political journalism, including the rapid spread of false information, the influence of technology on news production and dissemination, and the growing demand for journalism that reflects all voices and perspectives.

It combines practical exercises, peer learning, and guided reflection to help participants produce coverage that is professional, ethical and impactful.

  • How to produce responsive and inclusive election coverage.
  • Best practices in accuracy, fairness, and balance in political reporting.
  • Ethical considerations in covering candidates, parties and electoral institutions.
  • How to prepare for the final months of campaigning, election day and post-election reporting.
  • Ways to navigate challenges related to technology, online misinformation and media credibility.
  • Safety, digital security, and professional conduct during heightened political periods.

Training dates and venue
All trainings will be held at the African Centre for Media Excellence in Kampala. Applicants may select one of the following date options:

  • 29–31 October 2025
  • 10–12 November 2025
  • 17–19 November 2025

Each session will accommodate 15 journalists.

How to apply
Applications are open to all journalists in Uganda. Women journalists are especially encouraged to apply.

The application form is available online, where you will be asked to choose your preferred training date.

You will also be required to provide two samples of your best stories on elections or politics, and a letter of support from your editor or newsroom supervisor confirming that you will be released to attend the full training. Freelance journalists who cannot provide a letter of support should indicate this clearly.

Application deadline
All applications for the October course must be submitted by 19 October 2025. Applications for the November courses must be submitted by 31 October 2025.

Selection of successful applicants will be made on a rolling basis.
