The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) is delighted to announce another opportunity for journalists across Uganda to apply for grants supporting investigative journalism projects aimed at promoting accountability, transparency and the protection of human rights. These grants are specifically designed to assist journalists working on ambitious, high-impact public interest stories.

Why apply?
Journalism is a critical tool for citizen empowerment and accountability. By providing crucial information and platforms for deliberation, reporting strengthens the public’s ability to engage with governance. This grant is designed to support that essential work. It offers financial resources , enabling you to undertake in-depth investigations that give voice to community concerns and directly challenge leaders and decision-makers. Applying for this grant will allow your reporting to be a powerful force for change and citizen engagement.
Grant amount and support
Each selected journalist will receive a grant of up to UGX 1 million to cover the costs associated with the investigative project. This could include research, fieldwork, interviews, data collection, travel and any other expenses that will enable you to complete your story to the highest standard.
Grantees will also have access to mentorship from senior journalists within ACME’s network. These mentors bring years of experience in investigative reporting and will provide valuable insights and feedback on how to strengthen your story, refine your reporting techniques, and ensure that your content is both accurate and impactful.
Selection criteria
Applications will be reviewed and assessed based on the following:
- The relevance, importance, and potential impact of a well-researched investigative story idea that brings to light underreported public accountability issues.
- The feasibility and strength of your proposed methodology, including a clear plan for your investigation.
- The quality of your past work, demonstrating an ability to conduct thorough research, report on complex issues, and produce compelling, fact-based stories.
- Evidence that you have the necessary backing, resources and guidance from your editor or supervisor to successfully complete the project.
Women journalists, young journalists and independent content creators are especially encouraged to apply, as we believe in promoting diverse voices in journalism, ensuring that the perspectives of women and marginalised groups are heard and represented in important public discussions.
Requirements and expectations
All selected grantees must:
- Attend a one-day seminar hosted by ACME for guidance on refining story ideas, understanding reporting and financial requirements, and preparing for investigative work.
- Participate in mentorship from ACME, with editorial support provided by participating media organisations.
- Submit a letter from an editorial manager or relevant media outlet, supporting the project and confirming commitment to provide editorial guidance and support for publication or broadcast.
- Complete and publish/broadcast the investigative story within eight weeks of receiving the grant to ensure timely and impactful coverage of relevant issues.
- Deliver a well-researched, polished investigative story that holds power to account and contributes to public discourse, resonating with the public and addressing key issues in Uganda.
