Founded in Kampala in 2009, ACME is a non-profit organisation that champions excellence in journalism, professional media practice, thriving democracy, productive civic space, and citizen empowerment through communication and information in Africa, starting at home in Uganda.

JOB SUMMARY

 The Finance and Administration Officer provides essential support and plays a vital role in managing the organisation’s finances and financial systems, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring smooth administrative operations.

 Summary of key responsibilities

 Financial management and reporting: Assist with daily accounting functions; support payroll processing and payment to vendors; prepare and maintain financial records; generate financial reports; assist in donor reporting and monitoring of grant-funded projects.

Budget monitoring: Monitor budget expenditures and track financial performance against the organisation and project budgets; assist in preparing budgetary reports and variance analyses.

Cash management: Handle petty cash, ensuring proper documentation and reconciliation; assist with managing bank accounts and cash flow.

Office management, documentation and filing: Oversee daily office and organisational operations, ensuring compliance with organisational policies and legal requirements; manage office logistics; supervise support staff; coordinate procurement and disposal of assets; assist in records management including following up and filing regulatory documents and reports; manage day-to-day compliance with data protection mandates; and support the implementation of ACME’s safeguarding policy.

Human resources support: Assist in HR-related tasks such as maintaining employee records, supporting recruitment processes, handling leave and attendance records, and facilitating the onboarding process for new employees.

CORE SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Solid technical knowledge of finance and accounting procedures.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and accounting software packages.
  • Possession of excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ethics and discipline to manage confidential data and information.
  • Potential for growth and leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related fields.
  • Professional certification – CPA/ACCA qualification (Level 2) will be an added advantage.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in finance and administration – familiarity with a non-governmental organisation setting will be an added advantage.

CONTRACT PERIOD AND REMUNERATION

This is a permanent appointment, subject to confirmation following satisfactory performance, successful completion of a three-month probationary period, and availability of funding.

ACME offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications, and these are subject to discussion and negotiation as part of the offer.
