Training opportunity: Reporting on solar energy and its productive use in Tanzania

The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) is seeking passionate journalists from Tanzania to participate in a specialised 5-day workshop on reporting renewable energy and the productive use of solar energy.

About the course
The growing demand for energy in Tanzania, a challenge shared by many African nations, necessitates the exploration of sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Renewable energy sources, particularly solar power, offer a promising answer. While solar technology provides solutions for basic lighting needs, Productive Use of Solar Energy (PUSE) extends its application to economic activities, facilitating development in Tanzanian communities. PUSE can enhance agricultural practices, create employment opportunities, and generate income, contributing to poverty reduction and economic growth.

Despite the growing global interest in PUSE, with East Africa emerging as a significant market for solar applications, public understanding and adoption of sustainable off-grid solar energy in the region remain limited. A lack of clear information, the presence of misconceptions, and inconsistent messaging contribute to this challenge.

Delivered by ACME and supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, this specialised workshop aims to equip Tanzanian journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to address this gap. Through the creation of clear, accurate, and impactful reporting, participants will play a critical role in promoting Tanzania’s transition towards a sustainable energy future.

Why apply?

  • Deepen your understanding of renewable energy technologies and their potential impact on Tanzania’s development.
  • Gain the skills to critically analyse and report on PUSE initiatives, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Learn innovative storytelling techniques to craft compelling narratives on this critical topic.
  • Network with fellow journalists, experts, and stakeholders in the renewable energy sector.

Fully-funded opportunity: Tuition and any accommodation costs incurred during the workshop will be covered by ACME.
