Easter road safety tip sheet for journalists

This guide is produced as part of a project titled, ‘Strengthening the capacity of the media in Uganda to report on road safety policy, implemented by the African Centre for Media Excellence with support from the Global Road Safety Partnership.

During the Easter break, there is usually an increase in the number of people travelling across Uganda. This is what you can do as a road safety reporter or advocate.

  • Raise awareness about the importance of wearing seat belts to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities in case of a crash.
  • Highlight the dangers of drunk driving: During the Easter period, many people indulge in alcohol consumption. It is essential to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and how it can lead to road crashes and fatalities.
  • Discuss the role of law enforcement: Law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in ensuring road safety during the Easter period. Highlight the measures to enforce road safety regulations and ensure drivers and passengers comply with safety guidelines.
  • Discuss the importance of vehicle maintenance: Poorly maintained vehicles can increase the risk of crashes on the road. Discuss the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, such as checking brakes and tyres, and how it can reduce the likelihood of accidents during Easter.
  • Highlight the importance of road safety for commercial drivers: Commercial drivers, such as truck and bus drivers, often spend long hours on the road during Easter.
  • Discuss the importance of road infrastructure: Road infrastructure plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety. Highlight the importance of road maintenance and its role in reducing the number of crashes on Uganda’s roads.
  • Raise awareness about the importance of child safety: Children are especially vulnerable during road crashes. Highlight the importance of child safety measures, such as child car seats, and their role in reducing the number of injuries and fatalities in case of a crash.
  • Share tips for safe driving: Providing tips for safe driving during the Easter period can be a useful way to promote road safety. These tips include staying alert, obeying traffic laws, and avoiding distractions while driving.
  • Talk about the importance of road safety for pedestrians: Pedestrians are also vulnerable during road accidents. Highlight the importance of pedestrian safety measures, such as using crosswalks and sidewalks, and their role in reducing the number of injuries and fatalities among pedestrians.
  • Most importantly, talk about the need to observe the posted speed limits. Research has shown that pedestrians knocked at speeds higher than 50 kph have a 90% chance of dying.
