What happened
Police on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, blocked Ugandan political activist Dr Kizza Besigye from participating in a public debate on the divisive East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) at Emerald Hotel along Bombo Road in Kampala. Police said, “no one was allowed into the hotel without written authorisation from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Martins Okoth-Ochola.” Dr Besigye was then escorted by police to his office at Katonga Road in Kampala even as several officials were convened in the mid-western Uganda district of Kikuube, where President Museveni officially launched oil drilling on January 24.
