Call for expression of interest for country researchers on the mapping the state of the newsroom in East Africa

African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) invites expressions of interest from qualified candidates in Kenya and TAnzania to serve as consultants/lead researchers on a study that maps the state of the newsroom in East Africa.

The study undertaken by ACME, with support from the National Endowment for Democracy, seeks to:

  • provide a situational analysis of the current news media landscape;
    engage journalists and media policy makers on the state of journalism in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and compile an in-depth analysis that will foster stakeholder discussions, shape debate, and help develop better interventions; and
    understand the policies and strategies the news media industry has adopted to deal with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

ACME finalised the  Uganda research at the end of 2021 and is now rolling out the same in Kenya and Tanzania.

The country researcher will undertake the following activities:

  1. Hire research assistants to assist in data collection.
  2. Adapt Uganda’s methodology to suit your country’s context.
  3. Train the research assistants.
  4. Conduct desk research.
  5. Conduct the nationwide study of the state of the newsroom in your country (this includes (data collection, entry, and analysis).
  6. Produce a draft country report on the state of the newsroom in your country.
  7. Work with ACME to organise a public validation meeting to discuss the project report findings in the country.

Interested national researchers should submit a short expression of interest and a proposed work plan for the research to mwesige[at]acme-ug.org not later than Monday, 13 June 2022. They should also indicate their daily rate and expected person days to be spent on the project.

Refer to Terms of reference for country researchers on mapping the state of the newsroom in East Africa for detailed information on the research project, the scope of work and expertise required.
