Media freedom and threats against journalists in East Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic – Report launch

African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) is pleased to invite you to a virtual event in which we will release a report on media freedom and threats against journalists in East Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This report examines the operational environment of the media across six countries, namely Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, Tanzania, and Uganda.

It focuses on developments and challenges across three key areas, namely:

  1. Threats to media practitioners at the workplace and at an individual level that they faced during the pandemic. Whether we are grappling with a depressed media workforce in the region and how do we recover experienced journalists that found alternative livelihoods.
  2. Challenges faced by media institutions in the region. What is the future of a media house that fails to recover 100% of its advertising revenue from debtors?
  3. A regional model to grow the resilience of the media and journalists in times of crises?

The virtual event is scheduled to take place on Thursday 31 March 2022, 3:00 pm EAT on Zoom.
