US Embassy Uganda statement on press freedom

The US Mission in Uganda has appealed for respect and promotion of freedom of the press, saying it is a fundamental right that encompasses all.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day event organized by the African Centre for Media Excellence on May 3, Deputy Chief of Mission Patricia Mahoney, said the media, just like government, should strive to safeguard its freedom and act professionally.

“If you don’t have credibility, people won’t believe what you write.  They won’t trust your analysis.  They won’t value your viewpoint.   The public needs journalists to inform them, but journalists also need the public to read what they write, so it’s a two-way street and we all have a responsibility,” she said at Golf Course Hotel.
