Editors’ symposium on oil in Uganda

WHAT? Symposium for news editors on oil and gas

WHEN? Thursday 18-Friday 19 September 2014

WHERE? African Centre for Media Excellence in Kampala

SPEAKERS: Experts from PEPD, oil companies, service providers, donor agencies, civil society

WHY?

Good governance of oil, gas and mining (extractive) resources and revenues requires effective oversight. A knowledgeable and active media is critical to having an informed and engaged public, civil society and parliament with a view to holding the government accountable. In many resource-rich countries, however, journalists often lack knowledge, skills and resources to effectively report on extractive-related issues. It is in this regard that the Fund for Global Human Rights (FGHR), based in Washington DC, has provided funding to augment the larger Natural Resource Governance Institute (formerly Revenue Watch Institute)-funded training for a select group of reporters from Uganda, Ghana and Tanzania over next 18 months.  Kampala-based African Centre for Media Excellence, a not-for-profit professional organisation that seeks to improve journalism in Africa, is the local training partner in Uganda. ACME will use part of the FGHR funding to conduct a two-day training for editors from across Uganda and across media platforms on oil and gas issues so that they are better prepared to supervise their reporters and ensure comprehensive and knowledgeable coverage of this emerging sector of our economy. Given the high interest we have seen over the years in this kind of training, we request those editors who have attended similar seminars before at ACME to not apply. Women editors are specially encouraged to apply.

HOW TO APPLY:

Write us only 2 paragraphs. The first paragraph should tell us who you are professionally; the second should tell us why you want to participate in the training.

Deadline: Send the 2 paragraphs to info@acme-ug.org with a copy to gnatabaalo@acme-ug.org before close of business on Friday, 29 August 2014.
